If you know Thursday nights in Honolulu, then you know Redda Fire at Fisherman’s Wharf as the reggae and dancehall spot that works the crowd lovely til 4 in the morning. It’s a solid weekly that’s always worth dropping in on, but November is ridiculous with the combination of talent coming through and Friday holidays meaning one thing: late-night Thursday is ON!
This week the Icon Reggae Tour brings world-class reggae, dancehall and the feel of a true Carribean bashment party to the islands with soulful singer Mr. Easy, veteran deejay (toaster) Mega Banton (now going by Megah) and the Madd Squad Sound System from Montego Bay, Jamaica.
The name that may not ring bells with Hawaii audiences (but will after this Thursday?!) is the Madd Squad Sound System, who spin dub plates competitively with the top sound systems in the world. “They are really burning hot in Jamaica right now,” according to the night’s promotor and main sound provider Jahson the 45 Revolver. “To have them in HI shows the world we are really on top of what is bubblin’ in Jamaica.”
If the dancehall gets too hardcore, Redda Fire resident selectors (including the 45Revolver, Liloa and Zacharijah) promise “comfort-style lovers rock” in the second room. Which ever way you go, wear your dancing shoes. Redda Fire at The Living Room, Fisherman’s Wharf, $10 presale, 10 pm – 4 am, 21+
