It was like an act of God. No, it was an act of God. The day the earthquake hit Honolulu. So I’m sitting there with no power — no computer, no stereo, no cell phone service — feeling kinda Amish, kinda Little House on the Prairie — wondering what am I going to do today. Knit? Do a jigsaw puzzle? Talk to my neighbors? No.
I chose another old fashioned past-time: reading from the printed page! Shocking, I know, but surprisingly easy. The zine I picked up off my coffeetable, I’d had the best intentions of reading for weeks since it is done by Vivian Chow, a friend and tireless creative mastermind. HyperSweet it’s called, “a zine for people who don’t know how to relax.”

Relaxing in the quiet of the earthquake day, I devoured the whole tasty issue while pondering the irony of what Vivian writes in the editor’s letter: “The internet is a great medium, but there is nothing like being able to carry around printed words and images without having to depend on electricity or battery power to ingest them.” Ha! Was she thinking of me sitting in the dark after an earthquake?
The theme of issue 2.2 is Japan, and includes photos, comics, very well-written features, profiles and original illustrations, like that cute little chibi by art director Gary Shum. The printing and layout are superb (full-color!) and very polished. HyperSweet is distributed in LA, Honolulu, NYC and Seattle which really begs the question: how can I be down??
First step would be to pick up a copy, available in Hawaii exclusively at Stylus Honolulu. Raven & Shawn sell it for $2.00, which covers production and distribution of the non-profit publication. You can also put out via Paypal for mail orders by contacting hypersweetzine@gmail.com.

While we’re talking about Stylus, have you been there lately? It’s a great place to score discounted CDs and vinyl, quirky Xmas gifts and flashy used duds to wear to holiday parties. In case you haven’t yet had the pleasure, they’re located at 2615 S. King Street Suite A-301 — that’s the 3rd floor of the building at the corner of University and King, park in the lot and Stylus will validate when you check out.
